The sun in Shimla rises from above the Jakhu Hill in the east and sets over the State Museum in the west. Most of the points being on hill tops, command an excellent view of Himalayan grandeur and Shimla town.

A steep meandering path admist forests leads to this place. Kamna Devi Temple, also known as Krera Devi Mandir, situated on the summit of Prospect Hill. Moon rise and sun set can be seen here together. Temple dedicated to Durga Mata, believed to have been built by Rana of Junga. Also known as Kamna Devi, as wishes are believed to be fulfilled, after praying here. Excellent view of Jutogh, Subathu, Tara Devi. Built in 1888, a top Observatory Hill by Henry Irwin, a renowned architect during the tenure of Lord Dufferin (1884-88). Made of Himalayan grey stone and Burmese teak wood. Formerly known as Viceregal Lodge, once the residence of Viceroys of Imperial Raj. After independence, converted into Rashtrapati Niwas. Donated by President Dr. S. Radhakrishan for higher studies. Renamed Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. Renowned centre of academic research having Spacious lawns and gardens.

Tara Devi temple was built 200 years ago by Rana of Junga Bhupendra Sen. Named after Taradinath, a holy man who made the statue of Devi. Lord Shiva’s temple on the northern side of Tara Devi temple. Built by Bawas of Udasis sect. Weekly ‘bhandara’. Marvelous view of Shimla.

Jakhu is derived from Yaku after Yaksha. It is legendary abode of Yakshyas, Kinnars, Nagas and Asuras. Legend says that sudden landing of Hanuman flattened the hill. Excellent view of sunrise, mountains and town. Ancient historical temple of Hanuman, the Monkey God. Legend says that Hanuman’s sandals fell here. Presence of monkeys. A giant 108 feet high idol of Lord Hanuman was unveiled at Jakhoo Hanuman Temple in the year 2010 overlooking the entire Shimla city. This idol is the world’s tallest statue of Lord Hanuman.

In beautiful surroundings of Annandale and opposite an ancient temple, lies Army Heritage Museum, only one-of-its-kind in India. It displays 1857 execution order of Mangal Pandey, surrender document of East Pakistan signed by Pakistan’s Lt. Gen. Niazi in 1971, fence of LOC in J & K, stones of Zorawar Wall In Ladakh, along our frontier with Tibet, awards, medals, uniforms, weapons, etc., tracing Indian military history from epic to modern times. Visit the glass house containing 400 varieties of cactus, succulents, ivy, etc., machan and 2 pavilions overlooking helipad and golf course. The museum is drive-in, free of charge, open to public on all days except Mondays and gazetted holidays. Timings : April to October from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. & 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. November to March from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. & 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
